BSNL launches 100Mbps Connections in India |

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in a major announcement of Saturday, declared that it will rollout a new plan to offer its customers high speed “fibre to the home” (FTTH) service. This service will provide a bandwidth of 100Mbps and debut in Pune, Maharashtra and will probably be rolled out in various cities all over the country gradually.

VK Mahendra, BSNL principal general manager, also disclosed that the company had completed installation and was testing the FTTH network.

The FTTH network is powered with a gigabit capable passive optical network which helps to provide extremely quick speeds. With charges ranging from Rs 2,999 to Rs 83,999, the services are aimed at high value customers such as commercial spaces and buildings. VK Mahendra said that a trail service had been carried out earlier and was quite successful. BSNL is looking to target around one thousand customers in the first three months.

A Revolutionary Change to Say the Least

Right now these connections are quite expensive as they are in the initial phase, but this marks a significant step towards development of faster Internet connectivity in India. As the country has been slow to progress in the internet infrastructure, with one of the lowest broadband speeds, hopefully this change will bring India ahead on the world scene. Currently, India does not even feature in the top 30 fastest broadband nations of the world:

With the rollout of high-speed optical fibre internet to homes by BSNL, other companies are soon to follow. BSNL is generally the trendsetter for pricing and advancement of technology in India, and so it is likely that the other private companies will soon start rolling out their own high speed connections soon.

Mr. Mahendra mentioned who BSNL’s target market is going to be by saying:

We are looking for commercial clients and clients who can afford this service. The service requires optical fibre cables rather than the copper wires and hence we need the infrastructure to maintain it.

This development will also help more users to get on board the internet wagon and use other technologies that require higher bandwidth. Currently, we have been using copper wires for internet access at homes, and the use of optical fibres is going to increase the We see a lot of potential for startup services especially in the cloud sector in the near future. A faster internet service will definitely help in a faster acceptance of cloud computing by the average internet users of India, and the startups will have a better time working as well.
